In the tiny Malaysian village of Tualang Tiga, a deformed hunchback named Si Bangkok (P. Ramlee) is bullied by a gang of hoodlums led by Buyong (Salleh Kamil) because of crimes committed by Bangkok's father in the past.  Bangkok takes refuge with a cloth maker named Bang Selamat, (Daent Idris).  Selamat has been having trouble selling his cloth since the patterns he is using are old and the women of the village want newer styles printed.  Disheartened Selamat returns home to find that Bangkok has been keeping himself busy by painting various pictures and designs.  Selamat is impressed with Bangkok’s talent and uses some of his designs to print new cloth designs.  The new cloth sells out.

Bangkok continues to be tortured by Buyong and his minions.  Eventually Buyong convinces the elder of the village to ban Bangkok.  The elder’s daughter, Afida (Sri Dewi), is the only other person in the village, other than Selamat, that was nice to him.  Buyong wants Bangkok killed but Afida convinces her father to send Bangkok away instead.

Destitute and depressed Bangkok wanders off into the wilderness.   Giving up he falls to the ground in agony.  He is then taken to the land of the elves to see their leader.  Because of his pure heart, Bangkok is allowed a wish.  Bangkok wishes to become handsome.  He is given a ritual to follow and rules to obey.  If he breaks any rules, he will be destroyed.    Bangkok does the ritual, is made handsome and is returned to the land of the humans.

Bangkok returns to find that it is three years later and Afida is engaged to Buyong.  Bangkok confronts the town during a festival.  Afida, who hates Buyong and blames him for the death of her father, rejects the young suitor.  She then agrees to leave with Bangkok.  In a fit of jealousy Buyong kills Afida.  In a fit of rage Bangkok goes after Buyong and ends up killing another man and then killing Buyong.  The elf king appears and condemns Bangkok who then turns to the devil to try to become human again.  The devil has his own rules.

“Curse of the Oily Man” AKA “Sumpah Orang Minyak” was released in 1956 and was directed by P. Ramlee.  It is a Malaysian and Singaporean horror fantasy film.

Several “Oily Man” style movies were released around the same time, included are “Orang Minyak” or “The Oily Man” (1958) and “Serangan Orang Minyak” or “The Oily Man Strikes Again” (1958) and later, “The Oily Maniac” or “You gui zi” (1976).

The movie is more drama than horror.  The actual Oily Man doesn’t show up until the last fifteen minutes of the film.  As far as monsters go, it’s rather tame looking, just a guy in a black leotard with shiny black make-up covering his head.

The Oily Man is a supernatural creature in Malaysian and Southeast Asian folklore.  The creature is naked and covered with black grease or oil.  This is so he can slip away and not get caught.  He abducts young women at night.  The Oily Man was once human but has made a pact with the devil to win the person he loves.  To get his wish he much rape 21 virgins in 7 days.

There is also a deleted scene showing Bangkok cursing his father at his gravesite before he is taken to the kingdom of the elves.
