Camel Spiders. Yuucccckkkkk!!
Roger Corman is at it again. Leave it to Roger to make a horror movie about an ugly bug. Yes, there is such a thing as a camel spider, but they are not really spiders. They are arachnids but so are ticks, fleas, and scorpions. Arachnid just means it has eight legs and an exoskeleton.
In the real world they also are not man eaters. They’re just ugly. Nor are they poisonous, or run 30 miles per hour, or jump on people’s faces, or grow more than 6 inches long. Unless you’re Roger Corman that is. In that case watch out.
In Roger’s world camel spiders not only attack and kill insurgents they hitch a ride to the US in the mouth of a dead soldier. Once in the American Southwest they run amok. In Roger’s world they swarm over people and devour them growing huge, fast and powerful. The blood flows free. People scream. That’s basically the plot. There isn’t much character development so when each person gets swarmed you’re not really that invested in what happens to them. Roger’s films are low on budget but big on action. This one is no different. Its cheezy, it’s creepy, it’s gross, and it’s fun.
"Camel Spiders" was released in 2011 and was directed by Jim Wynorski. It is a low budget horrormovie made for the SYFY channel. The movie stars Brian Krause, C. Thomas Howell and screamqueen Jessica Cameron. The spiders are CGI. There are complaints about the script having lots of sub-plots that do nothing more than add more spider food and padding the run time. I was OK with that.
The actors cast to play American soldiers did a wardrobe change after lunch and then played the Taliban forces.
